Frequently asked questions FAQs

Q. What is digital television and what do I need to receive it.?

A.  Digital television is not new, It has been with us for about 15 years.  It was first called on-digital and then itv. digital.  Some years ago the name was changed to free-view it is this system that will be used for all television transmissions after the switch over in 2011. You will need a digital compatible television or a digital add on box, in order to continue to receive channels after that date.  You can use your existing television with an add on free-view box or you can purchase a new television with integrated freeview. If you are buying a new television please make sure that it bears the digital tick logo similar to the one shown at the bottom of this page.

Q. My television is old and does not have a SCART socket can I still use it.?

A. Yes if you purchase the right type of freeview box with a built in modulator.  You may however wish to consider buying a new television as the set that you have is over 17 years old.  Since that time all sets made for the UK market have had SCART sockets fitted as standard.

Q. Why do I need to replace my old aerial for digital tv when my analogue signals are OK.?

A. In some cases your old aerial may be adequate for digital signals.  In most cases you will experience problems because the old aerial does not tune to the correct part of the spectrum for digital television.  Also the cable will require replacement to ensure good performance, your old cable will not in general have the correct screening and as a result you may experience problems in reception.  This can take many different forms, from sound and picture break up to poor lip sync and loss of channels.  You may also have problems with the interactive side of the system.

Q. I need a new aerial I am worried that I am going to get ripped off by rogue traders and cowboys who can I trust?.

A.  If you are having a new aerial please be careful who you choose to do the job, mistakes can be costly.  Use a reputable installer who is a either a member of the confederation of aerial industries ( CAI) or a registered digital installer (RDI) preferably a member of both.

All CAI members have to meet the confederation’s strict criteria for membership & work is  inspected before membership is gained.  In addition all CAI plus members have obtained a qualification in signal reception pathways, have had formal training in safe working at heights, and have undergone a criminal records disclosure. All members are required to have professional indemnity insurance of at least £2,000,000   The same is also true for registered digital installers “who are the only people licensed to use the governments digital tick logo on their advertising on vehicle’s and web-sites”.   The tick “certification mark should always be accompanied by the eight digit number”.  It is a criminal offence to use either the digital tick, or the aeri-al logo,  without being a registered digital installer.

This statement in no way is intended to imply that all other installers are bad or cannot do the job correctly.  But why take the risk.
